[further gte thoughts] Hi Tom, am also looking forward to getting more info... figure eventually general coverage/follow-on stories will flesh some aspects out.. certainly looks like a very big deal... am not sure if the implications have percolated thru the market yet... if not... maybe we'll drift up?... :) and internet telephony will give their version on monday... do you have access to the paper version? (which reportedly will be more extensive in coverage) must admit that i'm still working on digesting this... bigger deal than i was expecting... tho am not complaining... ;).. did you see last week's globe's write-up?: think Dan Arazi's quote(s): "..We could not have hoped for more than this. This is the breakthrough we have been waiting for...We are entering one of the world's leading telephone companies by the front door." sums up the situation pretty well... article puts the orctf share of revenues @ "...$70-80 million, and perhaps more, over a period of one to two years..." and "...300,000 lines in one to two years..." might be a little on the high side... but no matter how you slice it, is significantly more than the previously largest announced orctf win: the 1000 lines with lu in the netherlands... :) also thought it interesting that it was revealed that gte has been trialing orctf/fujitsu for six months or so... which goes back to the timeframe for trial expansion @ msft... and the competition for this contract included not only (as more-or-less expected) Cisco and Alcatel, but also Nortel (were they teamed with csco?) and others... no doubt including wstl... and probably lu?globes.co.il back to modems... thought it interesting that telechoice noted that modems will be "Fujitsu supplied Orckit modems..." at least to start.... sounds like modems made in israel... and that "GTE says it has no interest in having non-fujitsu/orckit modems added as part of the solution, unless these are licensed from Fujitsu/Orckit so it is essentially the same technology..." sounds like a set-up for a modem/pc oem kinda thing... don't think orctf or fujitsu is really interested in modems and may very well like to pass this off as soon as possible... and telechoice goes on "After two years , GTE anticipates that the market will have retail solutions for standardized modems, and will let the marketplace decide the best DMT-based solutions to interface with its services.." sounds like gte expects standardization/interoperability to move very quickly ... (towards "their" solution) and i only recently noticed that fujitsu joined the uawg, believe in early april... and this monday and tuesday "The First International Conference on VDSL"... from telechoice again: "In case you are wondering about VDSL, given Orckit's background in that arena, GTE is presently focused on the lower bandwidths and is not prepping a near-term VDSL solution as part of this arrangement. However, you can bet they are going to look at it in the future." ...especially if we're talking sonet/onu ... in those cases a supporting infrastructure would be in place and vdsl would/might only be a line card away... :) ... or something like that... best wishes s
