Panetta was planning to run for something when he returned to California. I believe it was governor, but I could be wrong. He then decided not to run.

It would be hard for me to believe he would run against Gore. He seems to be very ethical, and to me is an appealing candidate for some office, but a leap to the presidential race seems a little out of his league.

It is Panetta who came out first when the scandals were just breaking, and urged Clinton to tell the truth. Maybe he is just a decent, straight-arrow kind of guy!!
