Mr. Watson, my resident geek tells me that he found it trivial to port a Linux ray tracer to Irix. Whether you can go the other way, I cannot say. Merced is currently vapor, and now apparently will continue to be that for another 2-3 years. IMHO, SGI has time to execute. Will they?

In the end, they'll come out to the same price after the 5 is outfitted properly and the O2 is packed as well... price/performance in any given arena may be different... etc. Basically, buy a 5 for business, basic computation, etc. buy and O2 for visual-computing, video (awesome!)... etc. I dunno but I never got a good feeling when comparing SGIs to SUNs. Too many fundamental differences...
