Coherent's new High Power Al-Free Lasers

The following is from Coherent's WWW site (http://www.cohr.com)

May 1, 1998

40W Bars and 30W Fiber Array Packaged Bars at 808 nm

Coherent's Semiconductor Group is pleased to announce the introduction of new 40W laser diode bars. These bars are based on Coherent's proprietary Aluminum-Free Active Area material and are in stock and available in a wavelength range from 800 nm to 820 nm. The technical details of these bars are the subject of a post deadline paper to be presented at CLEO '98 in San Francisco, California, May 5-7, 1998.

These bars are 1 cm linear arrays mounted on conduction-cooled packages. They require no special operating environments and are easily integrated into existing applications "We chose to focus on producing a very high-power bar, at this traditionally difficult wavelength, to show the capability of our semiconductor laser technology," Marketing Director, Sandra Todd, commented. "We will be extending this technology into a wide variety of wavelengths."

Based on these bars Coherent's Semiconductor Group is also introducing 30W Fiber Array Packaged bars (FAPTM). The FAP family of products offers up to 30W into an 800 æm fiber with an N.A. of <0.16. The FAP Series is a family of products with increasing levels of integration to add thermal electric coolers, a variety of monitors and can also be purchased as a complete turn-key system. High-power laser diode bars have been desired at this wavelength for direct material processing applications, medical therapeutic processes, as well as for pumping a variety of laser material. The FAP bars are especially easy to integrate into existing applications that make use of fiber-delivered laser diode emission.

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 company and a world leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of lasers and systems for medical, scientific and commercial applications.
