C-Cube's ZiVA DVD Decoder Powers Real Time Audio/Video on Gateway 2000's New Solo 9100 Notebooks

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1998--C-Cube Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ:CUBE - news), the market leader in digital video compression, today announced the selection of their ZiVA(tm) DVD decoder with SecureView(tm) for Gateway 2000's (NYSE:GTW - news) first DVD notebook computer.

C-Cube's highly integrated, single-chip digital video decoder enables Solo 9100 notebook users, to achieve real time, superior audio/video playback of DVD software applications and movie titles.

The inclusion of a dedicated DVD ROM drive and decoder chip signals a new trend in notebook design. Movie content has become readily available in the DVD format and new PC-specific DVD titles are planned for release this year. Inclusion of DVD drives as a principle feature in notebooks will help bolster DVD as the next-generation standard for optical storage drives. DVD drives are also backward compatible with CD, CD-R and VideoCD content.

''Solo 9100 exemplifies Gateway 2000's commitment to state-of-the-art notebook design,'' said Clint Chao, senior director of marketing for C-Cube Microsystems. ''By making the jump to the DVD paradigm and leveraging our ZiVA technology, Gateway raises the bar for expectations of notebook computing functionality within the enterprise and consumer markets.''

C-Cube's ZiVA decoder was selected by Gateway 2000 because of its high level of integration. ZiVA is the industry's first single chip DVD decoder to incorporate the DVD Consortium's copy protection scheme, known as the content scramble system (CSS). By using ZiVA with SecureView, Gateway's Solo 9100 notebooks can offer users full compatibility with all DVD-standard and MPEG-2 content.

C-Cube design win- Just announced Gateway 2000 chose C-Cube for its first portable with DVD.

Jeff do you have a link for this? I personally think the portable with DVD will stir the DVD movement substantially. Portable DVD is going to be the next big kewl item to have! And CUBE will benefit.

Never mind - I just found it!
