Komatsu - can any industry experts/insiders assess the impacts of this
to CYMI? What % of Nikon & Canon steppers (out of their grand total)
are shipped to Japanese customers - obviously half of those will not
be CYMI lasers, so what actual # of lasers is that?

ASMLF 'plans to ship' some Komatsu lasers, does anyone know how
many?

Still, it seems CYMI has most of the market in 1999 (Komatsu's fiscal
1999 year), since:
"Komatsu hopes for sales of Y5 billion in year ending March 1999"
in a 1999 total market of somewhere between Y25 billion (fiscal 1997
market size) and Y50 billion (fiscal 2000 market size).

If CYMI gets 80% of fiscal 1999 market share of Y40 billion
('Y40 billion' is my rough est. for 1999, based on Y25B -> Y50B from
fiscal 1997 -> 2000) then that leaves 20% for komatsu & friends,
which is Y8B, allowing them to 'over-exceed' their goal of Y5B,
still giving most of the market to CYMI...

Any other opinions on this announcement?

Everything I've seen or read about Komatsu has not been very positive. Oh, they make one hell of a tractor-- but who knows about DUV lasers.
In past Cymi conference calls Cymi management has all but called them liars-- always announcing how great their laser is -- better in all respects to Cymers but never having their machine independently tested for verification of capabilities. That's why Cymi has always considered Lamda as their main competitor.
At the recent SPIE conference the Komatsu "exhibit" was awful---- a 4th grade class could have done better--- yes, some tractor photos on a 2' x 2' tabletop but not much laser info. The one sullen Komatsu rep slung back in his chair wasnt exactly reeling them in at the booth.
Given their past history of false announcements and the lack of accountability in Japan for same, who knows what in that press release is true or not.
If they have sold a few lasers in Japan wonderful. We know that all suppliers want a back up so they are not held hostage to one supplier and this has been stated before in various annual reports.
From all thats been reported they have long way to go to before they are a serious competition to Cymi.
I'm sure this issue will come up and be addressed in the conf call.
