t's ironic isn't it. DELL reaps the rewards of Compaq and IBM using AMD and NSM
and "perhaps" getting better deals from Intel. Compaq and IBM do the dirty work and
DELL lays back and cashes in.
Honestly though, DELL would probably do just as well or better if the sold some AMD
based boxes. It's Dells production model that is so good. I'm not sure "Intel Inside" is
the "major" driving force behind DELLs success.

What dirty work ? If it AIN'T broke, don't fix it. Why would you take any risk at all ? Going away from Intel when everything is going well, no way would they do as well. All other chip makers are copying , there is only would creator of chips, they lead, all others follow.

Its funny that just last week someone from the other thread was screaming how Intel is only one speed ahead now, and BAM here come 350, 400, talk of 500 Mhz chips, wow, blowing them away.

Jim,

When considering the money and time to spend on different brand CPUs, one will find Dell's strategy is saving even more cost than competitors.

After Dell phasing out socket 7 in 1998 for desktop PC, it will save even more than its competitors which have to maintain testing and support for different motherboards and CPUs,

Same will apply to enterprise purchase. Wall mart has recently bought 400 Intel based servers from Dell. Do you think it makes sense to use some AMD and some Intel CPUs mixed ? IT won't like to save 2 penny for now and spend more time for debugging system later.

I think you are oversimplifying things. Dell's decision to use/not use K6 is not based soley on getting a better price on the chip or keeping Intel honest. You have to consider the entire value chain for Dell in delivering PCs to its customers (as you pointed out with Dell's production model) and what effect having AMD as a supplier would have on its value chain. Also, I do believe Dell has developed a "specialized" relationship with Intel and they do not want to mess with it by keeping Intel honest as you say. The Dell/Intel relationship is designed for long-term success, not short-term cost savings.

All one has to do is look at the numbers coming out of every other Intel-only boxmaker, and one can see this notion that Dell's success is due to it's shunning of AMD/Cyrix is garbage. Dell is just cherry-picking the easy money.
