When in doubt, do your own research:

shimano.com

I have STX components on my Trek 970 and have had no problems, which I converted from a mountain bike to a road bike via thin tires. :)

DT,

From top to bottom:

Deore XTR
Deore XT
Deore LX
STX-RC
STX
.
.
.
Acera, Altus etc

IMO, I wouldn't be too concerned about buying STX. I've ridden them in the past and have found them more than adequate. BTW, I currently have STX-RC brakes on my bike. I believe however, that Shimano is phasing out STX, so you may want to ask for a good price for the STX(I am not sure of this).

Hope this helps,

Brian
