Yes, all apologies. No more. On that note, and having read some of the debate here over Silicon germanium vs. galium arsenide, and concerns over being led astray by Gilder, I see in the April 2nd 1997 issue of ASAP George Gilder wrote the following- "Pushed by the advance of the spectronics paradigm, the current ride of Vitesse, Anadigics, Triquint, and other gallium arsenide innovators is likely to continue. The major long term winner is silicon germanium" This was not exactly a sell signal on Vitesse even though he did choose to remove it from his essentially long term ascendancy list. I had dumped vtss and missed some gain there, but really, I see that he didn't berate vtss in the near term, and all should remember he sees potential in stocks he doesn't include on his list- even Microsoft.

So, Schmoople- Who do you think will best benefit from the new age of nearly free bandwidth? This is the thing I have not figured out about Gilder's thoughts. I see how Intel benefited by being on top of prices and able to constantly compete on price as the performance improved, but it seems to me that Intel benefited more from the fact that they had a proprietary system and were able to force the competition to play on their turf. Since communications is going to be TCP/IP based, I don't see the way for a bandwidth exploiting company to create a proprietary system to which they can apply leverage. For instance, anyone can make a router to compete with Cisco because they sell whole boxes and there's not proprietary interface that cisco's competitors are going to have to adopt. I'm sure there's some angle to get leverage but I cannot see it yet. Dragonfly
