Johannes: I couldn't agree more with the thrust of your analysis. But the "nice cash reserve" is being transformed into Symbios, assuming the deal goes through. Although I cringed initially at the prospect of losing that reserve, I believe the investment will be profitable, replenishing the reserve handsomely over time. I cannot speak with any personal knowledge of the "human factor" qualities you mentioned but I think the company's annual reports are works of art. Very creative and indicating considerable corporate pride and esprit de corps. The report last year is a gem, filled with excellent quality photographs of early American toys and crafts epitomizing workmanship at the human level. The illustrations are chosen to represent care and craftmanship at the corporate level. On the opening page of the text, in waxing eloquent about its "success story", is the statement: "The other half is a set of values that inspire our work and guide our relationships with customers, partners, and employees: we recognize the collective worth of human imagination, creativity, productivity, and collaboration--all of which our solutions support with an elegant simplicity." And ". . . the real substance of all we do is balanced by an abiding regard for the human factor . . . ." Just words? Of course. But it tells me something about the corporate ethos. For what that's worth. The 1996 annual report was illustrated with cartoon figures and childrens' storybook text, including cartoon representations of both the chairman (Adler) and CEO Saviers. Some may scoff; I see creativity and imagination. Starowl
