>>Harry was more an accident than maverick - as a Senator he was a mediocre New Dealer evincing no maverick qualities.<<

Maverick--an independent individual who refuses to conform to his group.

Mr. Zolt, I beg to differ. Witness HST's tireless efforts investigating and exposing the corrupt defense contractors in the early '40s. This was a 1 man crusade in which Truman travelled across the country in his own automobile and, in an incredible display of integrity, never bowed to special interests either from his own state or his party. His efforts saved the American taxpayers millions of dollars and the lives of thousands of soldiers. He was certainly a maverick in this instance. Calling the Republican Congress back into session in 1948 was a maverick move as well.

He was a great leader. I agree with your comparison to the current occupant of the White House.

As Harry once said, "I don't give 'em hell. I tell the truth and they just think it's hell".
