How do I know he was dumb? Watched him a lotta times on TV. Read a lotta books about him. He was a simple guy with a few simple ideas. This appealed a great deal to people who felt the nation had been unfairly taken to task over the Vietnam war, Watergate, and the Iran hostage situation. He promised easy answers to difficult questions. I don't doubt that he was sincere. But intellectually gifted? Gimme a break. He had no idea what his own advisers were up to most of the time.
