Joey,

With all due respects, it's worth noting that 560 of the jobs were already scheduled to be cut, due to closing an old obsolete FAB here in California. Most of the rest are due to a strategic shift -- getting away from commodity products and focusing more on the opportunities which they gained with the Cyrix acquisition. They are probably using the announced losses as an excuse for doing what they had already planned.

That said, their recent earnings report highlighted major shortfalls due to Asia. It's increasingly hard to understand the wall street belief that Asia will have little impact, and will mostly give US companies a buying opportunity while their assets are cheap. (How much will US companies -- even stupid ones -- pay for Korean organizations which have negative net worth under any western accounting rules?)

This is from a reply to this post. IMO once we are done with the digging of corpses in Asia, the world will be shocked about what was going on down there. The US S&L fiasco and run of the mill variety South American corruption won't even come close! I wish it had been different but my wish unfortunately will not affect the outcome.
