Ok...here is my take on today's news release...

<<After extensive evaluation of the South Falcon Dam extension of the Bob West Field in Texas, Arcon has elected to withdraw from the project. The risk involved in the initial $11 milion project is significant from the legal and production view. >>

To me, this says the company is getting out of the exploration business and into the production business! They have one scenario, with the Bob West Fields, which would produce certain expense and speculative result. On the other hand, they have DF-144, which also carries certain expense, however, in my opinion, also certain result.
They choose to concentrate their efforts on that. This was a wise choice.

<<The recently announced development of ethanol-based gasoline sales in the ''Golden State'' has opened up tremendous opportunities for Arcon's DF-144.>>

I think the author of the news release did the reader a disservice, as California is only one of several states seeking alternative fuel additives. New York, for instance, is also exploring. I do not think the author did a very good job in explaining the magnitude of the market involved here. I work in the insurance industry, and one of the lines I specialize in is public automobile, so I am pretty familiar with many of the bus manufacturers. These folks are designing these vehicles to depend on ethanol based products. The market size is SO large, it is almost hard to comprehend.

<< Tosco has taken a giant step in responding to consumer demands by
introducing ethanol blended gasoline in California. >>

There they go with that Tosco thing again....Hmmm...

<<Assemblywoman Debra Bowen, Natural Resources Committee Chairwoman, has introduced AB 1642, which would provide the flexibility to allow
refiners a choice of oxygenates. The Transportation committee recently approved the legislation unanimously (23-0). >>

Many people have brought many things to this thread. GaBard with his relentless DD, Gordon with his extensive knowledge of the industry. If I am ever able to offer anything of value to the thread, I would hope that it would be in my political perspective of the above statement. I can say with a high degree of certainty that the legislation Ms. Bowen introduced WILL be seen again. Do not underestimate the political power of the EPA & EPD. (Geez...Have you hugged your local tree-hugger today?)

<<Arcon has commissioned Maverick Engineering, Inc. to manufacture its first 100,000-gallon plant for production in Sept. 1998>>

Contract awarded. Progress.

<<-- April 24 -- HAZOP study complete (Hazardous operations OSHA
is complete);
May 1 -- Issue process and final installation plans;
May 8 -- Final signoff of engineering requirements;
May 8 -- Issue turnkey contract;
June 26 -- Supervision of detailed design project;
July 3 -- Authorize procurement of all equipment, pumps, etc.;
July 17 -- Assemble unit for completion;
Aug. 14 -- Site installation ready for completion;
Sept. 1 -- Complete commissioning and start up.

Is it me, or is it funny how this schedule has production coming in and sales being made sometime around the October mark?

<<Arcon is busily defining markets in several regions of the country, such as Colorado, Ohio, Indiana in addition to California and has been contacted and is in discussion with two major corporations about DF-144.>>

DUH.

<<Management also is taking investment advisement on the share structure of Midland; particularly the Series ''A'' preferred on ways to enhance the total value for sophisticated and institutional investors.>>

With production in full force for only 30 days prior to the scheduled conversion, I personally would like to see them come up with a way to delay conversion.

All in all, not a bad release. But Geez...who do they get to write these things? I say we tell them to give Big Dog an Aqua-Vie to drink and let him write the next one!

:-)
