CUBE vs. ESST numbers....

Esst Historical Data
"
Quarter Ending Sep-96 Dec-96 Mar-97 Jun-97 Sep-97 Dec-97 Mar-98
Revenues MM $60.10 $76.70 $81.50 $45.10 $52.20 $70.70 $52.9
Earnings MM $12.90 $16.90 $17.80 $3.80 $1.70 $-12.0 $-12.4
Profit Margin 21% 22% 22% 8% 3% -17% -23%

CUBE Historical Data

Quarter Ending Dec-96 Mar-97 Jun-97 Sep-97 Dec-97 Mar-98
Revenues MM 95.50 94.1 71.1 81.7 90.1 87.3
Earnings MM 17.3 15.4 7.7 9.7 11.6 10.2
Profit Margin 18.1% 16.4% 10.8% 11.8% 12.9% 11.6%
"

Now lets break the #s down for the last 4 Quarters,
ie, since ESST began the price war...

ESST earnings... -19 Million
CUBE earnings... +39.2 Million !!!!!!!!

Also, Note the profit margins...

ESST's profit margins continue to erode at a dramatic rate...
from +8% to -23% in the last 4 Quarters....

CUBE's profit margins have remained relatively flat since the price
war began... between 10.8% and 12.9% !

All I can really say is that ESST does not know how to manage its VCD
business, and I sincerely think they will exit the market... their
lack of profitability will force them too, and I also think it's
possible for Fred Chan to get the boot... that would be nice.

maybe VCD chip sales in asia outside of china will be picking up for cube..................

AMSTERDAM -- Dutch giant Philips Electronics NV said Wednesday that first-quarter net profit from ordinary operations jumped 56% to 716 million guilders ($356 million).

The results were far above analysts' expectations.

Market-watchers also said they planned to raise earnings and share-price targets in light of the 56% jump in the Dutch consumer-electronics group's income

The results eased fears that the economic slowdown in Asia would significantly damage Philips's results, and the company's shares surged both in the Netherlands and later in U.S. trading Wednesday.

This month's Stereo Review has a review of Pioneer's second generation player, the 505, and an article on the format battle for DVD audio, the CD replacement. It is interesting that the audio format has not been standardized yet, when DVD movie discs are becoming commonplace. If they really wanted DVD to replace both CD players and VCRs, you'd think they would have agreed on a format so that today's players could play the audio discs, which I understand will be in an incompatible format with today's DVD players. Uh, who the hell is in charge here? If we could agree on a friggin' standard, maybe DVD would take off! Hello? Anyone listening? (oh, and no info on Pioneer's decoder in the article, but they liked the player, except for the backwards play that could not go frame by frame, can only do that in forward mode. So when does Basic Instinct come out on DVD? There is one scene that merits a high definition frame-by-frame examination . . . )
