What a fiendishly clever way to profit from the internet! Swamp people with ads, and allow them to pay extra for ad-free access!

Can't really see the turning off of banner adds for subscribers as workable. Advertisers want to pay for a known quantity - the defined membership roster of SI. They'll factor in the unknown (the lurkers), but are really paying for access to the known, the people with the disposable income to send in $125 to participate. I see more advertising as inevitable, but hope that it is as nonevasive as possible.

I was a lurker for 2 years. The free trial period got me to bite and my check was sent in last week. I probably would have eventually sent money anyway because this thing does become addictive and you eventually feel strongly enough to post on something or another. I think the present set-up and strategy is very sound.
