Soros had been approached by Hyundai about buying their stake. By partnership agreement, he could not do so directly. This deal provided a way for that to happen, and Soros was willing to basically pay Loral $35 million to get the deal done. Very crafty. Thus, they help partners with much needed cash flow, facilitate rollout of gateways with escrow money, and get a strategic partner who has offered to help in "exercising influence" in
certain parts of the world, if needed. Otherwise, he is a passive investor. The deal has been offered to 7 other partners as well. DACOM is the other party involved with Hyundai.

By the way, a complete call has been successfully made over the G* system.
