Chip:
Most VCs firms distribute (in kind or in cash) their successes back to their limited partners. They typically do _not_ reinvest the proceeds into other ventures. For that purpose, they simply raise a new fund (granted, usually their previous limited partners, having made nice money will participate in the new fund). As for few deals as successful as 3dfx, this is only partly true. You'd be surprised how many big successes firms like Venrock have on their hands.
Eric
PS: I should know,I was one of them, though arguably not as big, with my former company, Ray Dream, which was backed by Venrock. I also happen to be starting a small venture fund now, so I've gotten more familiar with the mechanics of VC funds that I ever thought I would:-)

I think you have it a little backwords... The recent volatility is a dream to daytraders, and a nightmare to longs. I dont know about you but if I paid $30-35 last week and saw a drop to $24+ in less than a week id be pretty pissed. Do you realize as a trader you could have made 2 points just about every day this week if you timed it right? and believe me it isnt hard to time when you have millions of shares artificially keeping the price down during the day.

What the hell are they all doing in New York? Has anyone figured THIS out? Laura called me at 3:45 from NYC yesterday...
