DScottD,

I can't take credit for the wicket city joke. It was old in 1965 when the Gateway Arch was completed. Another one making the rounds was that the Jolly Green Giant was hanging around the Arch, looking for McDonald's.

At the time of its seemingly endless construction, the Arch was not popular with the local populace. They thought it was an eyesore. Many said this with the thought in mind of the sun bouncing and glaring off all that stainless steel. Another thing that was howled about was the orientation of the Arch was was such that one could not go to the top of the Arch for the purpose of watching a baseball game; the playing field itself could not be seen at all from up there.

There were lots of jokes and commentaries (mostly negative) about the Gateway Arch. I'll try to remember some others.
