thanks for your reply.

Vertical integration is a 2 edged sword.
Its biggest advantage is that it allows for maximum flexibility at the best prices.
The down side is that you seldom are on the absolute leading edge, you are only using what is already available on the market. IBM with their GMR heads for example.
QNTJM does have some head manufacturing, but it has to date been a financial drain.

Hmmmm...the numbers I get off of Seagate's website show 87k back in q4fy96, rising to 111k in q4fy97, falling to 101k q2fy98. Have you picked up a more current number?

Can't help noting that in the last couple of quarters it would appear that Seagate has unloaded more employees than Quantum has.
