<128MB RAM, two <9ms HDDs and a large (250MB) partition dedicated entirely to the Windows swap>

<Here's a bit of news, in case you didn't know it:>
If you have 128MB of RAM you will NEVER see swapping,
and therefore there is no need in the dedicated swap
file. Just in case you didn't know it, homebuilder
and "general tech guru"...

BTW, do you know by chance the HP model numbers with
K6 inside?

Michael,
Thanks, I can verify that a fast HD has a lot to do with system resonse. Let's face it. These big name boxes like Packard Bell, Compaq, IBM and maybe HP (since you know more than I) are NOT speed demons compared to what you can buy mail order or make yourself.
Take for instance the Compaq 4540 K6-233 machine reviewed in this months Computer Shopper. The slowest machine they reviewed. Not because of the K6 but they were using an Intel VX chipset in the mobo and a Quantum "slow"foot hard drive.
