Alan - my last message didn't go through. I pointed out that by 1935 it was illegal for US Citizens to own gold - they had to turn in to the government. I think they got about $32/oz for it, and the price was later pegged at $35/oz officially until 1971. It was also illegal to issue debentures backed by gold, and this was the case in Canada too, and may still be so.

I don't know what penalties were in force for non-compliance - but it couldn't be traded so this was penalty enough.
