<Now I wonder whether men who pee sitting down learned that from their fathers, or it just seemed to be a better way to do it. I don't suppose any studies have been done?> Hi Christine, Post after post, you continue to make us think in new ways about mundane things... Well, you really got me thinking about this one. Fortunately, this is Saturday, and I had already been outdoors for some nice fun in our crisp New York springtime air, and so I had the time to search through a lot of clinical records, anecdotal stuff, etc.... It would seem that men who sit while peeing may have picked that up from one or more significant females in their lives while they were yet young and developing....either directly, say through a sort of forced feminization, or indirectly from a process of identification with the significant female(s) where a very strong attachment existed. In the later instance, this could in fact be a love ritual(the sitting while peeing) These men exalt the feminine in the world...it seems to be very special to them, unlike their otherwise masculine traits which they are simply indifferent to as something not so special. Now, this is not the whole story though(it would seem that nothing in life is ever the whole story...I am sure you have found that to be true) At least part of the remainder would seem to be found in the facts of genetic predisposition and cultural construction, and how in some instances, not all certainly, the two are related. If the male in question had the hormonal experience in the embryonic stage that was discussed earlier on this thread, then sitting to pee could simply be a gender(as opposed to sex)appropriate behaviour for that male. In other words, he would look around, notice that women are sitting to pee(well...not that we would literally be peeing all around him) and have the feeling that this way of doing this thing seems to speak to him at some level that is deeper and more personally meaningful than standing up. Also, dollars to doughnuts, the sitting to pee would be simply one element in a whole constellation of feminine traits for this male...but this would be the trait easiest to disguise as something else were he at all anxious about being a feminine male in a largely masculine male powered world. The other traits he would have to work at suppressing in public, were he to have this anxiety. Well, I actually have some more to say about this subject, but it is time for me to repair to my kitchen if I want everything to be spiffy for my dinner guests. Oh....yes, that would be another interesting topic...This is the third Saturday night when I have had the "Lets Talk About Our Feelings" dinner at my home. My guests just love it(I mentioned earlier, remember, that this is such an unique and forthright thread that we should edit it into a book) It reminds me of when I was growing up in my family and we got out the color slides and projector. After dinner, everyone gathers around my very large monitor and my laptop monitor, and I show them selections from our thread here. As I said, they just love it. You Christine, and so many of the others here, are just so bright, imaginative, witty, droll, and so much else.....Now, my dinner guests are even talking about starting a fan club or something like that. After dinner and thread screening, then we go out dancing. It makes for a nice evening... Best, cd
