MICROSOFT now targets WIN 98 at businesses
APRIL 21, 1998

COMPUTER RESELLER NEWS 04/13/98 P. 1, 8

"Think you know what audience Microsoft Corp. targets with Windows 98?
Think again.

Microsoft has quietly changed its marketing tune on the soon-to-ship
operating system, positioning it as both a multimedia-rich and
Web-integrated consumer product and an interim corporate desktop release
and prelude to the delayed Windows NT 5.0.

The mixed messages coming out of Redmond have caused the same confusion
that Windows 95 and Windows NT sparked nearly three years ago, resellers
said.

In past months, Microsoft executives adamantly characterized Windows 98
as a consumer product and cautioned Windows NT was the platform of
choice for businesses. The next major release, Windows NT 5.0, is
expected in late 1998 or early 1999.

Speaking at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference on March 25,
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said, 'Microsoft is sending a pretty
strong message to business customers that if they've got the memory to
run NT 5.0, they're better off to plan for that, and we do think we'll
see the market on the business side shift to Windows NT 5.0.'...

In recent weeks, the company has told resellers Windows 98 is an
appropriate corporate desktop upgrade, a move some observers said shows
Microsoft may have been distracted by delays in Windows NT 5.0 and its
antitrust battle with the U.S. Department of Justice."
