LoD - Peter is not too far off - Dell has 2 people on site at MSFT, CPQ/DEC has 300, HWP more than 50. Dell does innovate in mfg process, serviceability, and chassis design but they do not contribute technically to either MSFT or INTC in a significant way, in comparison to the other two. It's just not their model - ROI for that innovation is just not worth the investment. Dell is plenty good enough without claiming that they are strong in areas where they have chosen not to play.

LoD, Steven (and anyone else who I've upset<g>) Okay, I phrased it badly, I admit it. I was simply trying to contrast Dell with IBM/HP, in answer to the question "is Dell the next IBM or HP". I agree with you that Dell is an innovator, not an inventor - that's what I was saying (though I guess I left out the innovator part <g>). I view Dell a bit like Ford in the Model T days. The biggest factor in it's success was the manufacturing method, not the product, though the product was a damn good car. I think we should close this topic off now, before people get hurt. Peter
