Alan,

This subject is one of the disappointing things that surround Fibre Channel. I believe that the opportunity for Fibre Channel to compete directly with ATM in the WAN was lost about a year ago. (The lack of delivery of the FC/ATM gateway from NTT hurt this effort.) Now that Gigabit Ethernet has reached critical mass, I think development will accelerate in that area, cutting off valuable resources for Fibre Channel.

The same opportunity exists in the SAN space now. Fibre Channel has a clear advantage here, given the fact that storage devices will use Fibre Channel natively. However, if widespread FC implementation does not occur in a relatively short time, I think GE could make some inroads here too.

I am also somewhat concerned that Gigabit Ethernet has attracted the major networkers, to the exclusion of Fibre Channel. I'm waiting for the day when they discover Fibre Channel. (I think it will happen, but I'm not sure when.) At that point, I think Fibre Channel will really take off. Storage Area Networks should provide enough of a growth market to make success stories of most of the FC players.

Craig

Alan,

I have looked into the issue of DWDM in the WAN to an FC SAN or LAN. It is doable according to the engineers and manufacturers I have asked about this. I am glad to see that IBM is making it official. It is critical that FC companies not lose this part of the turf. I agree with Craig that the ATM-FC interface would be nice, but over the long haul DWDM-FC is probably going to be big business.
