Thomas, if I understand Emile correctly, he is arguing that only certain Christians will go to Heaven, and that a whole bunch of Jews are evil. From his platform for the public office he ran for in Louisiana, we know that he believes only "white" Eurocentric history and culture should be emphasized. These views don't strike me as loving or tolerant or inclusive of all the races of man that God made in his image.

What I am saying is that while Christianity may be the religion that makes the most sense for some people to believe in, there is also a long history of millions of deaths attached to it, predominantly in the Middle Ages and in twentieth century Europe. I am a student of history, and I think it is vital that history's lessons are widely understood.

I am also saying that it is not the Christian belief system itself which has done harm at times, but the insistence that the Christian belief system is superior to all the others, and must conquer all in its path. This insistence that Christianity is the ONE TRUE WAY--that all the wonderful people in the world who are not Christian are not blessed and are going straight to Hell--is also an attitude which is frequently expressed on this thread.

I am really perplexed that you see my argument of religious freedom as similar to Emile's. History is fact, and those are some of the facts about Christianity. Of course, Christianity has also brought comfort to millions of people throughout the last two thousand years. I don't see any point in pretending that history didn't happen, nor do I see how discussing history in pointing out the dangers of religious intolerance is in itself hateful.

To say it another way, Emile has a very exclusive view of who is deserving of salvation, so exclusive it excludes most of the people on earth. I think the fact is sometimes lost on this thread that Christianity is a minority religion. I have a very inclusive view of who is deserving of salvation, so inclusive that it includes people of all the races and religions on earth, as well as homosexuals and other often persecuted groups. How you can say that I am at all like Emile is truly puzzling.
