I also don't think SYBS will go under - what you will see is a significant restructuring of the company - perhaps liquidation of some of the products (i.e. they get sold to someone). They may give it a shot post-restructure for awhile, and then depending on the situation, may try to get acquired.

I really don't know what the breakup value is of SYBS - what exactly do they have in there that's worth something to someone else? My understanding is that some of the tools products are useful in the context of being from a single vendor, but would have much lower value to an independent company.

So, unless something really weird happens with IFMX results this week, I think this is good nes for IFMX. I see SYBS having more and more problems, while IFMX presents itself as a solid #2 in the DBMS market. IFMX would become the clear anti-ORCL choice, and would get a lot of business just for that reason alone, as well as business for the ol' fashioned way - they earned it.

Here's a horrible thought - what if Bob F. wanted to buy SYBS?

Actually, he seems to have his head too grounded to do that. It is the kind of thing Phil would have done. I think it would be a terrible, terrible idea. Just as IFMX is getting back into shape, it messes itself up.

I could see someone like Platinum buying SYBS, or at least some of the tools.

Jeff,

Thanks for the understanding. Personally I think SYBS is well positioned in the Internet technology area along with ASE performing very well as a data source. ORCL should help IFMX and SYBS sell more data sources 'ala the competition with folks like SAP and Baan who MUST be looking for an alternate data source by now. Why feed the competition dollars for R&D?

When it comes to extended data types... IFMX and SYBS have different perspectives and if there really is demand for such, the market should bear the two perspectives/architectures.

Data warehousing is a tossup depending on who you talk to. Personally I have heard the talk about it exploding as a market force for years. Today it is still not common place. Perhaps that has to do with the definition of such.

Best of luck.

Jeff...

Good to see you back on the board. I've been gone myself quite a bit recently due to lots of client work in fact we have a campaign breaking at IT Forum.

Also, I agree with your last post on the healthy process of debate!

@jim
