My understanding is that SAP and especially Baan are both making big commitments to NT 5/SQL Server 7, pouring in large development dollars and cooperating closely with Microsoft (to whatever extent any interaction with these cannibals can be considered "cooperation").

I know I've been slammed in the past for raising the Microsoft menace before it's fully baked, but I continue to believe that by summer of '99, the Rebel Alliance's (data)base will be well within the range of the Microsoft Death Star.

As Mr. Bertrand points out, the successful companies will defend their niches, but my (reluctant) bet is that SQL Server 7 will become the clear "Oracle Alternative" for the major Apps companies. Informix will be strong in the most demanding OLTP and OLAP applications. My bet is that there will be enough of a market here to justify a doubling of the stock price from these levels in two years. I don't know enough about Sybase to comment on how they will distinguish themselves.

May the Force be with us.
