Berkeley speeds firewall checkpoints

By Jim Duffy
Network World Fusion, 4/27/98

Berkeley Networks has rolled out software for its switches that the company claims performs firewall packet filtering at wire speed.

The Firewall Accelerator Agent delivers up to 40G bit/sec of firewall switching performance when combined with Check Point Software Technologies, Ltd.'s FireWall-1 product. The software runs on ASICs in Berkeley's Exponent switches.

The Firewall Accelerator Agent supports the "stateful inspection" capability of FireWall-1, Berkeley said. Stateful inspection results in more intelligent packet filtering by recognizing applications that dynamically determine which TCP or UDP ports to use for network transport.

The Firewall Accelerator Agent costs $9,995 per initial Exponent line card, and $4,995 for each additional line card. It will be available in July.
