I'm not sure the Y2K problem will result in better
hardware sales, though I've seen plenty of commentary
to that effect. Y2K is primarily a software problem.
Buying new machines won't fix it.

BTW even Windows NT (4.0) is not Y2K compliant.

Mary Re "may not be as rosy"

I think the picture is just as rosy as Tony says. The article IMO
simply talks about using IP for communications.

IMHO mainframes are not going to away anytime soon. I don't currently
work on mainframes but I know that there is no way a PC can compare
to even a decade-old super-computer even though its MIP/ Gflop numbers
etc appear to be better.

Just my 2c.

Mary, >>>" That may just be a dead cat bounce. Certainly in terms of $s, units, or market share
- the picture may not be as rosy."

No, not a dead cat bounce. Both IBM and where I sit have roadmaps well into the new millennium (not sure about Hitachi), with plans to sell all we can build of a new, faster machine each calendar year. Re-read post #54730. No Intel processor, or system known to date, nor Sun, or anyone else has plans to address any of the functions/features I mention in it. Well, you could say Tandem is addressing the RAS part.

Re health of the mainframe, check with me again in, say, 2001.
