Department Asks Insurers About Their Coverage For Viagra

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(04/29/1998; 0930)(EIS)--
Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin has sent a letter to the
State's health insurance companies to determine their policy
concerning providing coverage to consumers who want to purchase the
prescription drug Viagra.

Published reports indicate that some insurance companies provide
coverage for this drug, with various procedures for acceptance, while
others do not. Viagra was recently approved for use by the Federal
Food and Drug Administration to treat impotence in men.

"Given the potential benefits of Viagra and the overwhelming
demand for the prescription drug, we are asking health insurance
companies to provide information as to whether or not they are going
to provide coverage for Viagra and justification for their decision."
said Superintendent Levin. "We are asking companies to adopt a
thoughtful policy with regard to providing coverage for this drug."

The Department is telling insurers to respond to its letter by
June 15. Based on the responses, the Department will determine what
follow-up action may be necessary.
