It seems you're trying to take the same position I did in the religious discussion. People don't let you do that easily around here!---they want you in one camp or the other. Del sees me as pro-Christian and Jane saw me as pagan, when I was trying to say that what I am is irrelevant. I believe that the distortions and abuses occur as a result of myopic, often exclusionary vision and interpretation of the proponents or opponents of a system (any system or set of ideas)rather than from the principles of the actual belief system. And that people stop using an objective and balanced consideration of the actions based on the system. And was that a rather run-on and confusing thought? If so, it's cuz it was a run-on and confusing thought.

In the case of patriotism...both CGB and Michael love their country and both admit it's not perfect. One is tending toward one end of the spectrum--seeing it as fatally flawed and leaving what has become untenable for her. The other is a part of the system and is fighting to save it in his way. I think we need to accept that people take different paths and stop trying to turn every thing into a right and wrong decision and someone who's different as the enemy.

Edward Abbey said
The patriot must always be prepared to defend his country from his government.
That could probably be extended to cover a lot of categories.
