This is a beautiful thought, Penni. Thanks for sharing it. I will remain quiet on the religion debate you mention in your post, except to say I don't think of your comments being based on your being either as a Christian or a pagan for sure (I bet you are a delightful combination of both)!! And one more small comment, one that I believe I have mentioned here before. It is impossible for me to accept the argument that people do bad things based on individual behavior alone, when the Pope himself is apologizing for institutional Catholic complicity with the Nazis, and misunderstandings in the New Testament which led to massive, organized prejudice against the Jews in Europe. History is full of examples of bad behavior orchestrated or condoned by the leaders of particular religious belief systems, with believers too often following like sheep.

If you could explain to me how to get over this leap of logic, I think I would understand your position better.

Incidentally, thanks for your instinctive understanding of my complex feelings about America. I do believe it is easier to see things more clearly from a distance, and I promise to report back on what I think of America as an expatriate, if I ever become one. Nothing is simple, but I do believe some people end up feeling like they belong, or might be happier, somewhere else. Each culture is different, and to accept on a life-long basis the country of your birth as inherently superior seems a little like never questioning the religious beliefs your parents taught you.
