I just learned this so allow me to show off. You don't zap a patient who has flat lined. You use it on patients who are in fibrillation ( chaotic electrical activity ) - hence defibrillation. They do heart message or inject a drug to jump start a dead heart.

I know they do it all the time on tv ( but not E.R. ) but it is bogus.
