Pigboy - Re: "Sequent .. They apparently are giving up on their Dynix. Is this true? And, do you think CPQ's takeover of DEC will threaten the development of DEC Unix? If so, what the heck is SQNT doing?"

Sequent is putting a major effort into the upcoming Merced. Up to now, Sequent's Operating Systems(s) were tailored for their unique implementation of multiprocesing.

With Merced, I believe the hardware implementations of MP systems will be more standardized by virtue of the Merced architecture. Thus, any two companies making a large MP Merced systems should have a lot of commonality in hardware---so why have different software if the software is basically UNIX?

Hence, it makes sense for DEC and Sequent to collaborate on a common IA64 UNIX implementation.

As for DEC UNIX - it will be around as long as there is DEC-specific hardware. As is quite clear, DEC is fastening their future to Merced so Merced is the name of the game.

Now, you might wonder what COmpaq and Sequent might be up to, given COmpaq's penchant for acquisitions and Sequent's emphasis on Big honking Enterprise Servers, a market that Compaq would dearly love to participate in.
