Informix Shows Progress With
First Quarter Profit
(05/01/98; 5:48 p.m. ET)
By Shawn Willett, Computer Reseller News

Informix Software continued its slow but steady road to
recovery, posting a profit, trouncing expectations, and
recording a 12 percent revenue increase for its first fiscal
quarter ended March 31.

The database vendor's net income of $4. 9 million, or 3
cents per share, compares with a huge loss of $144.2
million, or 95 cents per share, for the same quarter last
year.

The profit also bested Wall Street analysts, who
expected Informix to show a loss of 4 cents a share for
the quarter, according to First Call.

Revenue also rebounded, up 12 percent to $167.2 million,
compared with $149.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

"Although I am pleased with our progress, there is
certainly more work to do in building the new Informix,"
said chairman Robert Finocchio in a prepared statement.

This represents the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company's
second consecutive quarter of profit, after three
disastrous quarters of large losses, restatements, and
revenue declines. In the fourth quarter, Informix
surprised Wall Street by posting a profit of $9.2 million.

Last year, Informix saw its market share fall
dramatically, according to reports from market
researcher Dataquest, in San Jose, Calif. It fell behind
rival Sybase as the the No. 2 Unix database vendor and
further behind Microsoft and Oracle in the Windows NT
database market.

However, analysts give credit to Finocchio for laying the
groundwork for a rebound for the database vendor.

Does anyone have info regarding Michael Murphy's track record?
I'm aware of some of his recommends that have turned very sour!
As always with these guys you tend to hear of their good
calls and you don't here of their bad ones.

Thanks!
