"More For Less -- 3Com, Others Push LAN Switch Prices Further Downward"

"Analysts say fierce competition and improvements in silicon will drive prices
down even further for basic desktop and workgroup switching. As a result,
they say, smaller companies will find it harder to survive, but customers can
expect bandwidth to get even cheaper.

"The [vendor] winners of this game will be those who can achieve economies
of scale, like a 3Com or an Intel," says Jeremy Duke, director of network
market research at In-Stat, a research firm in Scottsdale, Ariz. "The smaller
players will get eaten alive." From the customers' point of view, Duke says,
"that's hallelujah, because it means network managers will get more for less
money."
