Now really....did you think that GNET bought SI for $33 million dollars to run an ad-free site? Where do you think the return on that investment is going to come from? Stock threads? Lifetime subscriptions? The whole thing is going to change, probably with banner ads on every page. Its a wonder it hadn't happened already.

I have been on the internet, and ARPAnet its precursor, for over 22 years now. A purist knows that it was created to foster the free exchange of information. Nobody ever said there weren't going to be ads or fees to cover the enormous cost of running the servers, programming, managing it, etc. I wouldn't call them purists - I would call them naive. The 'free exchange of information' doesn't have anything to do with costs, it has to do with sharing knowledge.
