For newbies...explanation of Bid size and Ask size <inside> By now you probably know that you buy on the Ask and sell on the Bid....the difference being called the spread.But you might be asking yourself.."what does the bid or ask size mean?".The answer is simple.The size simply is the number of shares that are available.I'll give an example to make things clearer.You might see a quote that looks like this: Bid size Ask size 4 1/2 10 4 5/8 10 The above says that you can sell 1000 shares at 4 1/2 or you can buy 1000 shares at 4 5/8.I came to the number 1000 by taking the "size" and multiplying it by 100.So say the bid size was 20 instead of 10,then you could sell 2000 shares at 4 1/2.As a GENERAL rule of thumb if the bid size is higher than the ask size it is a bullish sign.If the ask size is higher it is a bearish sign.Hopes this helps some of you.
