ISDNET to Implement Ascend IP Navigator With VPN Routing
on Its Multiservice Frame Relay Switch Network

Business Wire - May 04, 1998 08:43

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998--

Addition of IP Navigator to Enable ISDNET With Competitive Edge in Internet
Services, Lower Operating Costs and Performance

Ascend Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) today announced that ISDNET, an
Israeli Internet Service Provider, recently installed IP Navigator on its network of
Ascend B-STDX 9000 Multiservice Frame Relay switches. ISDNET plans to utilize the
new VPN Routing capability for IP Navigator, also announced today (see separate press
release). With the addition of IP Navigator in their backbone network, ISDNET can now
offer a host of new data services, all from a common network infrastructure.

ISDNET is managing its entire network using Ascend's Navis family of network and
service management products.

"IP Navigator gives us a critical competitive edge by enabling us to supply a very large
number of high-speed connections and to support our Internet peering requirements at
the same time," said Dov Lapid, CEO of ISDNET. "With IP Navigator in place, we can
switch thousands of subscribers simultaneously and dynamically control large amounts
of data and applications."

IP Navigator is the industry's only shipping implementation of carrier-class label
switching across the WAN. Ascend is a leader in the efforts of the Multi-Protocol Label
Switching (MPLS) working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to
define an industry standard. MPLS will provide a standard for integrating the flexibility of
Layer 3 routing with the performance of Layer 2 switching to offer IP services along
with much needed Quality of Service (QoS) and Virtual Private Network (VPN)
capabilities.

IP Navigator is a software addition to Ascend's multiservice ATM and Frame Relay
switches, which provides high performance and scalability for carrier-class IP WANs.
It adds IP Layer 3 routing to the ATM and Frame Relay WAN switches, effectively
combining WAN switching efficiency and IP routing intelligence in a single platform.

"With the new VPN Routing capability for IP Navigator we can offer our customers
services with the same level of security and QoS they have come to expect from their
private networks," said Lapid. "This will save them the costs and time involved in
maintaining a private network."

"We are very gratified that ISDNET is recognizing the competitive advantages of IP
Navigator and that Ascend was selected to provide the company's technical
infrastructure as it enters the ISP market," said Dr. Hassan Ahmed, Vice President and
General Manager, Core Systems Division, Ascend Communications, Inc. "We are
especially pleased that in this demanding implementation, IP Navigator clearly is
demonstrating Ascend's ability to effectively meet the requirements for operation in
today's Internet."

Ascend also recently announced "Absolute" Quality of Service (QoS) capability for IP
Navigator. Absolute QoS will allow service providers to go beyond today's best-effort
services to support applications such as toll quality voice, video, and real time data and to
offer next-generation Internet services that meet bandwidth and delay specifications.
