Lets talk about the future, First there has been a lot of talk about Internet2, but none on this thread yet about the new 'Abilene' project proposed by VP Al Gore and inititally supported by Qwest, Nortel and Cisco. A news article on this: chicago.tribune.com Guy Almes (Engineering Director for Internet2) gives an overview of the project: ucaid.edu The full webcast on the announcement is at: ucaid.edu Be aware its over an hour and the first ten minutes are content free :-) Interesting points: o OC-48 and OC-12 backbone o OC-192 Futures o WDM Futures o Qwest Fiber o Nortel SONET Muxes o Cisco GSR 12000's o Cisco engineering for Multicast and QOS o no ATM in core o OC-3 and OC-12 and Gigabit Access o Access could include ATM The backbone is proposed as IP over SONET (POSIP is the acronym) and was chosen to minimize latency.
