Media Metrix to measure consumer impact of WebTV for Windows feature of Microsoft Windows 98 Operating System NEW YORK, N.Y., May 4, 1998 Media Metrix, The PC Meter Company, has launched a program to determine how consumers are using television viewing capabilities and other media functions on their PCs. Media Metrix' patented PC Meter will be used to measure marketplace penetration of the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system and the consumer impact of the WebTV for Windows feature of the many Windows 98 media functions -- particularly television viewing. The WebTV for Windows feature of Windows 98 offers users the ability to view television programs via traditional broadcast methods on their PC screens. Media Metrix will begin working with program providers to help them understand how consumers are using the video function on their PCs. According to recent Media Metrix findings, television-viewing capability on PCs has been relatively slow to penetrate the market. Media Metrix estimates that 0.3% of all US home PCs currently have video capability (approximately 132,000 US PC households). The introduction of Windows 98 could increase this penetration dramatically over the next 18 months. Some industry observers expect TV-enabled PC penetration to reach 3.5 to 5.0 million households over the next year. "The launch of Windows 98 will help increase the penetration of PCs with television viewing capability," said Steve Guggenheimer, group product manager, digital television, Microsoft Corp. "We are happy that Media Metrix will be applying its expertise in measuring actual PC and new media behavior toward determining the impact of offering television viewing and interactive programming capabilities on the PC." "We are very pleased to be working with Microsoft in this new endeavor and to be able to offer the first true measurement of television viewing and other exciting Windows 98 applications," said Steve Coffey, vice chairman and Chief Technology Officer, Media Metrix. "Since the PC Meter works from the operating system "up," we have the ability to measure all forms of applications and media," Coffey added. "The key to any successful new programming venture begins with research on user behavior. If that programming is to be advertising supported, the value of research increases even more," said Doug McFarland, Senior Vice President/General Manager, Media Metrix. "Our ability to measure all forms of media on PCs and PC operating systems will aid the marketplace in evaluating PC video as a viable advertising vehicle," McFarland added. Windows 98 is expected to launch in June 1998.
