Ian, I don't think people have fully realized the significance of " Ma Bell " teaming up with NN. T had been paralyzed for years by a fossilized CEO P. Allen who lived in the 50s. Mr Allen's efforts were directed at maintaining T's leadership through lobbying US Congress
through his clever assistant, an attorney, (I forget his name ),for protection, rather in having great a technological vision a la T.Matthews.As T faltered, the Board kicked him out and got Mr Armstrong in to rescue T. Now Armstrong is delivering.
Also I am comforted by the announcement this AM that Bell Atlantic
CEO Raymond Smith has announced that he will promote his Chairman Ivan Seiderberg to the CEO position sooner than the previously agreed upon Aug 14, 98 date. ( see Wall St Jour today page B8 ).This si very significant IMHO. Ivan was CEO of NYNEX prior to the merger with Bell Atlantic, 2 years ago in 1996. Well, as I remember it in 1996, Bell Atlantic's Smith hunkered over to Cascade Communications for his ATMs and he was not close to NN. On the other hand Nynex 's Seiderberg had signed a very large contract with
NN in 1995 and was one of the first baby Bells to recognize NN's technological edge.Pacific Bell and Southwest Bell were the others ).
Well, now with Seiderberg becoming CEO, I can envision that he will buy more of NNs large ATMs, if not out and out copy T's type of contract for a complete platform management.
Of course NN will find itself selling equipment to ?viciously ( GG ), competing folks. Well that's allright I suppose because the WWWeb explosion is like the gold discovery in California: everybody wants to get there and find the gold ( we don't know who will find the gold yet).
NN however simply finds itself in the enviable position of selling shovels to all the diggers !!! < GGG >. Obviously it will be up to the individual Telco to decide how to best configure their product in their markets to beat the competition. That will involve complex decisions about product mix, customer base, prices, pick of multiple suppliers ( T picked Lycos today to host it's website, MCI has Yahoo, both are now NN customers ) . And so with the web explosion about
to occur NN is uniquely situated I think to benefit from it.

TA

I don't believe this is a major contract. Sounds like marketing hype.

If this was a contract, I think the Post or the Globe would have picked it up last night.
