RALEIGH, N.C., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- US LEC Corp. (Nasdaq: CLEC), a switch-based competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC), announced it has completed the installation of its second Lucent Technologies, Inc. 5ESS* switch in Raleigh, North Carolina.

US LEC's tremendous growth in the Raleigh area has necessitated the need to replace the Lucent 5ESS VCDX switch, installed just 12 months ago, with a new Lucent 5ESS 2000 switch. The new switch provides additional switching capacity, expandable up to nine times the VCDX platform. The switch increases US LEC's network efficiencies, which encompass switches in Charlotte and Greensboro, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; and Memphis, Tennessee.

"In just over one year, we have installed and sold out the entire capacity of our first Raleigh switch," said Wilbur Williams, US LEC Vice President of Sales-North Carolina. "This new switch accelerates our expansion in Raleigh and the surrounding markets, and enables us to provide an increased level of network reliability positioning us to meet our customers' growing demand for sophisticated network solutions."

The new Lucent 5ESS switch in Raleigh is part of a previously announced arrangement with Lucent to purchase eleven switches. US LEC is deploying the Lucent switch platform to support its business expansion into selected southeastern cities throughout 1998 and 1999.

US LEC currently provides local, long distance, and enhanced services to business customers in the BellSouth, GTE, and Sprint service areas of North Carolina and in the BellSouth service areas of Atlanta, Georgia, and Memphis, Tennessee. Using its own network, US LEC serves large and mid-size business customers and had over 75,000 Equivalent Access Lines* in service on the US LEC network as of April 30, 1998. US LEC is certified to provide local exchange and long distance services in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Virginia.

*Equivalent Access Lines is a term used by US LEC to quantify the size of its network. For a detailed explanation of this term, please visit the company's web site at www.uslec.com.
