[Chronological, ramblings, recollections, ruminations, observations and perhaps nonsense RE: GigEthernet, Xylpex and Nbase at N+I '98 - Part I]

Attended the Networld+Interop '98 show in Las Vegas on 5/7 - the largest of its kind with over 600 exhibitors and 60,000+ attendees.

-Arrived about 9A somewhat groggy from the night before and needed an iced coffee latte stopping at an outdoor booth before standing in the registration line....soooo....got my free coffee form Xyplex! How nice of Xyplex to offer cappauccino(SP?) or latte's (in paper cups with Xyplex logo band wraparound) to all registrants as they waited in long registration lines.

-Registered

-Stopped first at CSI (mfg of high performance fiber optic connectors and a supplier to MRVC). FWIW, there new Quick Term (TM) connectors reduce installation time and costs with making fiber optic connections by eliminating the need for a curing oven reducing field installation time from approx. 20 to 2 minutes!

- NEO networks caught my eye from Eric L. posts 8474 and 8477. Their StreamProcess takes a revolutionary approach to network forwarding by incorporating massively-parallel technology, (Up to 128 GE ports or 384 FE ports with 16 GE ports.), leading to "Layer-Less" forwarding and with such great speed as to make performance a Non-Issue (I don't thinks so; these $28,000 boxes are only compliant with IEEE 802.1p and 802.1q with new standard 802.3z coming out soon (more later)). There banner is "Terabit Scalable Gigibit". I said "why don't you go to Petabit and be done with it"<G>. IMO, these GE startups have lots of hype and no User beef!

-Went outside to map out locations of exhibitors I'd visit and looked out an saw the 6-8 foot money-colored Nbase globe balloon perched on the Nbase pyramid with the Nbase logo around the equator. Would readily be seen by all visitors entering the Convention Center by bus, taxi or auto. Much classier than last year's balloon. MRVC gives good visual marketing at N+I show and now with Xyplex there is twice the effort. End of Part I.
