Zen Research has recently developed a 40x CD ROM drive that operates at slower rotational speeds. The key is that it uses multiple beams.
Using seven beams it would run a 6x drive at 42x. It is a true performance improvement. It could eventually lead to hard drive performance.
I would imagine Oak's controllers aren't designed to handle several beams.
In any event Oak better get on the beam because the innovators are moving forward.
