Christine,

I also watched the 60 Minutes segment about Denny's and noted one of the stated motivations of Denny's employees discrimination against their black customers was their impression that, on average, black customers were poor tippers. Apparently, issues of broader racial discrimination were also at play, but this significant economic root (weak tipping) does make this a more complex issue--one which will not be simply resolved by prompt seating and service.

Given waiters' and waitresses' reliance on tips (I think their base wage is ~$2.50/hr.) it does bring into question the quality of service we expect of servers when specific groups of customers (allegedly) fail to reward it. This validity of this issue was never addressed by 60 Minutes ("Hot Potato", anyone?).

Rick

Note: I don't believe this tipping stereotype is limited to Denny's employess. I performed in restaurants and clubs for a few years in my early 20s, and heard this same stereotype repeated by bartenders and servers on numerous occasions.

Christine:

What I would like to know is why so many sorrowful liberals (including your "libertarian" self) are so quick to jump on a corporation when it is an individual employee (who cannot be scrutinized every minute of the day, and who is probably a dullard loser who has no skills and can only find low-level employment like being a wage-slave minion at a Denny's, and who may be a personal bigot but is not a reflection of the corporate culture that he/she is working for) who is the purveyor of the perceived discrimination?

Your answer please. . .

Father Terrence
