Here is some more news for NetWorld+ Interop Check Point upgrades FireWall-1 Latest version to boost VPN support, refine LDAP management features By Joe Paone heck Point Software Technologies Ltd. today announced the next major release of its flagship FireWall-1 software at NetWorld+Interop, with a focus on providing faster and more secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability. Version 4.0 of FireWall-1 includes a multitude of enhancements, according to Greg Smith, product-marketing manager at Check Point in Redwood Shores, Calif. Smith said FireWall-1 4.0 will gain support for public-key infrastructure with the capability of handling Entrust Technologies Ltd. X.509 digital certificates. Support for Entrust certificates will also be available in Check Point's SecuRemote client VPN product, the 4.0 version of which will also debut at the show. Also in the certificate vein, FireWall-1 will now support the ISAKMP/Oakley automated key negotiation feature of the IPsec VPN standard. This lets two parties communicate securely using certificates, but removes many of the manual steps required by managers and users. Check Point also added support for the VPN acceleration coprocessor from Chrysalis-ITS Inc. The hardware-based PCI card, available in Ethernet or fast-Ethernet versions, processes key generation and encryption and provides secure key storage. "This eliminates the firewall's processor as a potential point of VPN performance degradation," said Smith. New support for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) goes beyond simply letting the protocol pass through the firewall. A new LDAP account-management client, available as a module for FireWall-1, also lets administrators define and manage user information in any LDAP directory from the same console they used to manage the firewall. "The firewall can query an LDAP server to enforce a security policy regarding a particular user," said Smith. FireWall-1 4.0 and SecuRemote 4.0 will be available in the third quarter, costing from $2,995 to $18,990, depending on the number of protected IP addresses.
