I've almost given up trying to figure out where we are in the cycle Mike - all I know is that based on financial fundamentals some companies in this sector are undervalued on a long term basis. Here's the latest part of the puzzle -

World Semiconductor Equipment Sales Surge in February

The Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan released figures April 30 that show world sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment rose 36.7% year-on-year in February to finish at $ 2.04 billion. The North American market saw $634 million in sales, a gain of 36%, followed in margin by Europe, where sales lifted 27.8% to $ 255 million. Sales in Japan expanded 20.0% to $484 million. Orders in financially- beleaguered South Korea were down 41% in February. The February figures shows mask, reticule and wafer manufacturing systems down by more than 50%, while others were on the rise.
